( they hadn't needed sombra to confirm it but knowing for certain, rather than rushing off on a whim, had helped. it had also given them a little time to discuss it, to get their supplies and commandeer one of the pods. that was what it took.
she'd been sleeping for a while, letting jack navigate the pod in space as best as he could, trying to get them to something that sombra's intel pegged as familiar. they were running blind and didn't know what they were looking for but doing something was right. they'd come too far with gabriel, with trying to rebuild something, to let it fall aside now. they weren't going to lose him. they'd do whatever it took.
when ana gets up she doesn't feel particularly rested, her mind having been analysing the situation whilst she'd been laid down. she's thinking through conversations, things that might help narrow down where gabriel had gone, though with the state of the ingress and gabriel's desire to get lost he could be anywhere.
it isn't a thought that makes her comfortable nor one that ana really wants to consider. she's moving back through the small pod to jack, hand on his shoulder for a few seconds before she sits down, removing the hair tie from her braid. not much of it remained in it anyway )
Anything?
( he'd have gotten her if there had been something. they were trusting sombra which also didn't feel right but, for a reason she couldn't (or wouldn't) explain she wanted them to find him. she wanted gabriel to be alright too. hopefully her intel and technology worked out here )
[Jack is not a pilot, for one thing, but desperate times call for desperate measures. He knows enough about it to make it work, though in better times he hired people to do things like this. Even so, this is an alien craft, which means he knows even less about it. The fact that they managed to escape Avagi and the ship seems to be running smoothly is a miracle in iteslf.
But that was only step one. Even with Sombra's help, space is vast. They're an entire universe away from home, and there's no real knowing where Gabriel ran off to. Their lead is paper-thin, but they have to try--both Jack and Ana are in agreement on that.
Even if they don't find Gabriel, they needed to leave Avagi before things came to a head. Maybe they won't be able to get back home, but this is better than being stranded on the space station. Of course, it all becomes moot if they run out of fuel before finding Gabriel or civilization or both.]
No, not yet.
[He imagines there's going to be a whole lot of nothing before there's something. Space is vast, after all.]
Why don't you get back to sleep? I'll tell you if anything comes up.
( she hasnt slept too much in between the unfamiliarity of the pod, in her mind working over gabriel and even, which she might laugh at, the fact that she'd now gotten used to having someone in her bed. but whatever the reason she was awake now, and though there was nothing for her to do until they found some trace or landed, she could at least keep him company )
He mentioned this once. We'd talked about going home but Gabrielmwas adamant that wasn't going to happen.
( that had also been a conversation long before they'd reached avagi, with ana unsure of whether his view was still the case. they hadn't had as many opportunities to have frank discussions with widowmaker being there but ana had at least hoped that he wouldn't have just left )
[Jack has his knees up in the pilot's chair, letting the computer take over for now. He stares out into the vast expanse of space and it's clear where his mind is wandering. He turns it over and over in his head--all the things he's done and could have done differently. If there was anything that could have kept Gabriel from slipping out of his grasp for a second time.]
I didn't think he'd actually run.
[But the situation on Avagi had been bad enough, he guesses.]
Perhaps there was something else that he was concerned about.
( he'd felt torn over his feelings regarding jack and ana and how they'd somehow gotten a little closer again. that had been before widowmaker had arrived, which had made things a little more difficult, though ana didn't believe that her alone had spooked him )
Hopefully it was his choice.
( as much as she wishes it hadn't happened, or that he'd mentioned something first, ana would rather it be because gabriel had chosen to run rather than avagi or the ingress doing something else )
[And maybe Reyes has earned that, after so long of being a pawn of the UN, then possibly of Talon. Jack can't pretend to know what was going on in his head.
He likes to think that Gabriel wouldn't be afraid of anything, but the last time they'd spoken, he'd made things fairly clear.]
I think he was counting on Widowmaker to kill him. Or us. For trying to have it both ways.
He liked to remind me of what she'd do every time we talked.
( and though ana would always assert to gabriel that it would never happen, that widowmaker wouldn't find out, she also had her concerns. it was why she tried to keep things quiet, never pre-arranging any meetings with him, catching him by chance every time. it hadn't been enough. it would never have been )
What if--
( she doesn't want the option to be there, for gabriel to never be found, but she's too practical. she can't ignore the option )
[Though he’d always been adamant about the fact that he wasn’t afraid of Widowmaker. Sombra may have been a little trickier, but towards the end she’d been willing to throw him a bone. She’s the reason they’re on this ship in the first place.]
It’s always been a possibility.
[That they wouldn’t be able to find Gabriel, likely because he doesn’t want to be found. Space is vast, and their lead is tenuous. It’s always been incredibly likely they’d never find him. He tries to sound sure of himself.]
( ana doesn't disagree there. it had been a conversation for some time, even if it had mostly been a silent one. neither of them had needed to verbalise their concerns for it to be known. the ingress, the mother, avagi. it had been a disaster for a long time, with each thing rapidly worsening. it didn't surprise her that gabriel was either gone or dead )
I suspect he thought the same.
( she knew he did. considering that gabriel had thought there had been nothing he wanted to return to he'd made a choice. just not the one that ana hoped for. it would also likely make it harder to find him but they were both just as stubborn )
He's out there.
( she'd rather him be lost in space than dead. at least there was an option to find him one way )
[Jack and Ana are smart—you had to be, to lead Overwatch—but Gabriel has always functioned on some other level, the nature of his job as a black ops commander. He can only imagine the scenarios and contingency plans he had in his head at any given time.
Still, he and Ana know Gabriel better than anyone else. If anyone stands a shot at finding him, even out here, it’s going to be them.]
( the difficulty of the situation didn't put her off. when the goal was finding gabriel there was nothing that ana wouldn't do to get to it, same as if it were jack in question.
she sighs, closing her eyes )
I gave him the photograph. The one that Shepard had found.
( she didn't need to specify. they knew which one )
( the weeks had been long, the days counted down until they were reunited. they'd had a mission that had required them to split up, cutting off two heads at the same time, though it had also meant that they'd been unable to keep in contact -- at least anything more than a brief signal.
she gets back first, taking the time to check over their hideout, unpack the remnants of her gear before beginning a watch until he returns.
ana tries not to think about how long it is. it could be days, it could just be hours but now that she's back, after those few weeks, any more time is just torturous -- not knowing if he's okay, even just wishing for him to be there.
when she catches sight of him, through her rifle, she breathes a sigh of relief, keeping track of him until he's close enough to see with her eye. she stows the rifle, standing to greet him, letting him come to her. ana gives a quick visual assessment, leaning the rifle against the wall, before stepping closer to him.
she loses the usual questions -- he'd made it out, clearly, and she hadn't tracked anyone else in with him. for the moment, for a few brief moments, she just wants to be in his presence. one hand rests on his arm, ana in his space, the other on the back of his head, pulling him down as she leans up to kiss him. it had been a long few weeks )
