[Jack has his knees up in the pilot's chair, letting the computer take over for now. He stares out into the vast expanse of space and it's clear where his mind is wandering. He turns it over and over in his head--all the things he's done and could have done differently. If there was anything that could have kept Gabriel from slipping out of his grasp for a second time.]
I didn't think he'd actually run.
[But the situation on Avagi had been bad enough, he guesses.]
Perhaps there was something else that he was concerned about.
( he'd felt torn over his feelings regarding jack and ana and how they'd somehow gotten a little closer again. that had been before widowmaker had arrived, which had made things a little more difficult, though ana didn't believe that her alone had spooked him )
Hopefully it was his choice.
( as much as she wishes it hadn't happened, or that he'd mentioned something first, ana would rather it be because gabriel had chosen to run rather than avagi or the ingress doing something else )
[And maybe Reyes has earned that, after so long of being a pawn of the UN, then possibly of Talon. Jack can't pretend to know what was going on in his head.
He likes to think that Gabriel wouldn't be afraid of anything, but the last time they'd spoken, he'd made things fairly clear.]
I think he was counting on Widowmaker to kill him. Or us. For trying to have it both ways.
He liked to remind me of what she'd do every time we talked.
( and though ana would always assert to gabriel that it would never happen, that widowmaker wouldn't find out, she also had her concerns. it was why she tried to keep things quiet, never pre-arranging any meetings with him, catching him by chance every time. it hadn't been enough. it would never have been )

( she doesn't want the option to be there, for gabriel to never be found, but she's too practical. she can't ignore the option )
[Though he’d always been adamant about the fact that he wasn’t afraid of Widowmaker. Sombra may have been a little trickier, but towards the end she’d been willing to throw him a bone. She’s the reason they’re on this ship in the first place.]
It’s always been a possibility.
[That they wouldn’t be able to find Gabriel, likely because he doesn’t want to be found. Space is vast, and their lead is tenuous. It’s always been incredibly likely they’d never find him. He tries to sound sure of himself.]
( ana doesn't disagree there. it had been a conversation for some time, even if it had mostly been a silent one. neither of them had needed to verbalise their concerns for it to be known. the ingress, the mother, avagi. it had been a disaster for a long time, with each thing rapidly worsening. it didn't surprise her that gabriel was either gone or dead )

( she knew he did. considering that gabriel had thought there had been nothing he wanted to return to he'd made a choice. just not the one that ana hoped for. it would also likely make it harder to find him but they were both just as stubborn )

[Jack and Ana are smart—you had to be, to lead Overwatch—but Gabriel has always functioned on some other level, the nature of his job as a black ops commander. He can only imagine the scenarios and contingency plans he had in his head at any given time.
Still, he and Ana know Gabriel better than anyone else. If anyone stands a shot at finding him, even out here, it’s going to be them.]
( the difficulty of the situation didn't put her off. when the goal was finding gabriel there was nothing that ana wouldn't do to get to it, same as if it were jack in question.

It may have been a different conversation if she hadn't been there.
