( they hadn't needed sombra to confirm it but knowing for certain, rather than rushing off on a whim, had helped. it had also given them a little time to discuss it, to get their supplies and commandeer one of the pods. that was what it took.
she'd been sleeping for a while, letting jack navigate the pod in space as best as he could, trying to get them to something that sombra's intel pegged as familiar. they were running blind and didn't know what they were looking for but doing something was right. they'd come too far with gabriel, with trying to rebuild something, to let it fall aside now. they weren't going to lose him. they'd do whatever it took.
when ana gets up she doesn't feel particularly rested, her mind having been analysing the situation whilst she'd been laid down. she's thinking through conversations, things that might help narrow down where gabriel had gone, though with the state of the ingress and gabriel's desire to get lost he could be anywhere.
it isn't a thought that makes her comfortable nor one that ana really wants to consider. she's moving back through the small pod to jack, hand on his shoulder for a few seconds before she sits down, removing the hair tie from her braid. not much of it remained in it anyway )

[Jack is not a pilot, for one thing, but desperate times call for desperate measures. He knows enough about it to make it work, though in better times he hired people to do things like this. Even so, this is an alien craft, which means he knows even less about it. The fact that they managed to escape Avagi and the ship seems to be running smoothly is a miracle in iteslf.
But that was only step one. Even with Sombra's help, space is vast. They're an entire universe away from home, and there's no real knowing where Gabriel ran off to. Their lead is paper-thin, but they have to try--both Jack and Ana are in agreement on that.

( the night was silent. there were hums in the air, the thrum of the engine, noises that floated only to river. it was black and still, the dark of space casting shadows across the ship.
it had been quiet since their last mission. they'd almost had a tussle with a lawman but mal had gotten them home safe, and without a job in mind they'd slowly floated through space searching for news or other traffic.
but not now. now everyone was sleeping. everyone that wasn't river.
she'd woken in the night, momentarily paralysed in fear but then the shapes in her room had become familiar again, and the sounds of her crew comforted her as they drifted into her mind. they were quiet when they slept. river liked their quiet.
though she'd tried sleep evaded her, a small feeling that she couldn't shake settling in her mind. it was intrusive. uncomfortable.
river had tiptoed out of her room, one foot carefully placed in front of the other as she'd crossed the ship, hands comfortingly grazing over the walls.
she found simon's room with ease, watching the rise and fall of his chest for a few moments before whispering: )
