( the night was silent. there were hums in the air, the thrum of the engine, noises that floated only to river. it was black and still, the dark of space casting shadows across the ship.
it had been quiet since their last mission. they'd almost had a tussle with a lawman but mal had gotten them home safe, and without a job in mind they'd slowly floated through space searching for news or other traffic.
but not now. now everyone was sleeping. everyone that wasn't river.
she'd woken in the night, momentarily paralysed in fear but then the shapes in her room had become familiar again, and the sounds of her crew comforted her as they drifted into her mind. they were quiet when they slept. river liked their quiet.
though she'd tried sleep evaded her, a small feeling that she couldn't shake settling in her mind. it was intrusive. uncomfortable.
river had tiptoed out of her room, one foot carefully placed in front of the other as she'd crossed the ship, hands comfortingly grazing over the walls.
she found simon's room with ease, watching the rise and fall of his chest for a few moments before whispering: )
