[ If Magnus didn't have the same ability with magic as she does with the fake perfume bottle, he would be jealous. As it is, he simply saunters over to follow her, admiring the change and the new outfit. It's a clever little contraption, one he hopes to create a copy of one day, only with magic instead of tech. ]
Portals are rough. [ He takes her hand and makes a point to intertwine their fingers, just to hold on. He knows how bumpy of a ride it can be traveling from place to place on Earth. Time and space are probably even worse. ]
( river chuckles, admiring the confidence before pressing the final button on the manipulator. it's quick, an almost instantaneous pop before they're in a city that looks as familiar as it does alien.
it has a very new york feel to it, mixed with alien architecture, different races walking amongst them. river reaches her other hand out to his elbow to steady him, just in case the travel took more of a toll on him than he expected )
What do you think?
( first impressions before she gives the where and when )
[ Magnus is definitely not sick off the ride, but he does seem startled by how instantaneous it is. Even a portal requires a little bit of walking, a little bit of time spent in the nether between locations.
He blinks multiple times to get his bearings, but his feet are steady enough that he doesn't need her hand on his elbow. It's just nice.
His gaze immediately flies all over their surroundings, trying to take in every detail even though it's not possible.
( her smile widens, his enjoyment giving her pleasure, a little excitement, and river drops her hand from his arm, squeezing his other hand as she gives him a little tug along the street.
there were so many places that she could have taken him -- she'd considered ruins, a little thrill of danger, but this time she'd gone with just a city. not that it didn't have its own set of excitement )
One of my favourite museums is in this city. It's somewhere I come when I need to just enjoy the beauty.
[ His step is momentarily unsure, but if he's learned anything in his life, it's that the best way to find your feet is to run ahead. So he follows without hesitation, trusting River to guide him along while he gets his head on straight again.
His eyes never leave their surroundings though, don't turn to River just yet. There's so much to take in. ]
Is that where we're going? On a school field trip?
[ He's entirely teasing. He's entirely excited by the idea. ]
( there's a light chuckle, river increasing their pace a little, keeping his hand securely in her own )
It's the 39th century. There's a lot we can do.
( even in a museum, though that doesn't happen to be the place that she's taking them. she promised him an adventure, some thrill and even though she has managed to do that in a museum (stealing something) it's not the experience that she's going for.
she leads him down the streets, through a gate that should look like it leads them to a park but suddenly the architecture has changed, almost as if it's a different time period or the architects couldn't agree on the style.
where the streets had been a bustling, advanced city with high buildings this new area is almost ancient looking, a relic in comparison. crumbling buildings, ruins of something else. but river knows exactly where she's going, weaving through the stones )
[ The mention of the 39th century startles him; it's a time period he never thought humanity would get to, let alone that he would see. It's all he can do to follow along with her, eyes wide as he tries to take everything in.
He wishes they could fly, enchant something to let them ride it through the skyline and see all that there is to see. But he trusts River to show him the good bits, the fun bits. And so he's not fully surprised by the site of the ruins when they get there. His gaze slides over everything, but he has to split his attention between that and following River's lead as they weave through the stones. ]
Millennia ago, before humans ever discovered this planet, this was home to some of the greatest musicians across the universe.
( okay, they weren't that great, not in river's opinion, but it's what they were known as. centuries have happened since then, new music coming forth but history books will still be written )
These are the ruins of that first civilisation.
( she keeps leading him, eventually taking him down into the ruins. the new civilisation had been build above ground where this one had lived both above and below ground )
[ He reacts with the appropriate awe, wishing that he could hear that music, hoping that they still play something like it somewhere in the city, so that he and River can enjoy it later.
He continues to follow along, but as they descend, he raises a brow and asks in a cheeky tone: ]
Are you taking me down to fuck in the catacombs, my dear?
( as much as she, jokingly, sounds scandalised river can't deny that she'd considered the idea. but it wasn't the plan. not the immediate plan -- if it ended up happening who was she to stop it? )
I'm showing you something you'll never get to see again. A little adventure.
I'd like to return to Peru again, but some things are worth it.
[ He's completely teasing. He has nothing against sex in strange places, but he's not leaping at the opportunity to do so surrounded by the ghosts of millennia. ]
You always take me to the best places. [ He smiles, more genuine, less teasing, excitement lighting up his eyes. ]
( who knows, maybe she'll have shown him better than this in the past. tombs weren't for everyone -- she was an archaeologist, she loved them, but they certainly weren't everyone's idea of a date.
as they descend river lifts a wooden torch from a holder, using it to light their path as she leads them deeper inside the ruin.
eventually, after a few winding corridors, they'll come to a room that opens out, a wide round hall )
I've always wanted to come here.
( though, perhaps, here as it used to be -- to see a concert in this very hall )
[ It doesn't rightly matter at this moment whether or not their going down to catacombs on a date. River's close to him and she's sharing a secret, something he'll probably never be able to see in his life. (He has high hopes for his life, but to survive for 18 more centuries? That's ambitious even for Magnus.)
He'll take the creepiness of tombs for the benefits that come along with them. ]
Wait, you've never--
[ The question is cut short as he comes into the hall as well. His eyes widen as he steps further in and turns on his heel to take it all in. ]
I was hired once to lead an expedition into part of the tomb.
( she lowers her voice as if to not disturb something even though no one was here, but the sheer thing of being in this hall still has river giving respect to it. a lot has been worn away but there are still features that hint at how beautiful this room could have been -- at how spectacular it would have been with a crowd and orchestra )
[ He takes a long, quiet moment to appreciate it, too. To let his mind wander to the same places that River's is. The way it must have looked long ago, how glorious and resplendent. The people gathered together, the walls echoing with music. ]
Are we going to now? [ he asks with a cheeky grin. ]
[ Magnus can't help but be a touch disappointed and responds to her with a small and playful pout. But the kisses are more than enough to make up for that disappointment, so he grins again, ready and eager. ]
( lead the way she does. this hall is a little further away, taking them longer to get to through a series of winding corridors. it's worth the walk in the end when they find it.
though the second hall is much smaller than the first, perhaps for small groups or more intimate gatherings, it's as well preserved as the first, stone seating around the stage, statues carved into the walls.
river is awed, keeping him pulled close to her as she examines the room, hand running over the architecture.
but, as beautiful as this room is theyre about to become more intimately familiar with it. though the room is preserved the ceiling isn't as well looked after, with a few of the stones starting to fall onto the stage, causing a small cascade towards the door. though they'd moved away from it river still pulls him towards her just to make sure, falling against the wall. she spares a glance once they're down which tells her one thing -- their exit is blocked )
[ Their surroundings enrapture him, too, and it's with wide eyes and a slightly parted mouth that he follows River through the corridor into the smaller hall. His hand is tight in hers and he moves quickly to keep up with her at every tug, marveling over the same architecture as she does.
When he hears the first crumbling of rock, by reflex he does what's he thinks is necessary. Magnus pulls her close against him, just as she pulls him, hugging her to his chest while he sends up a shield to surround them, protect them from any falling debris. It's only when the rumbling has stopped that he tentatively releases her. The shield is only a shimmer, allowing them to see through it, though he doesn't drop it yet. ]
Darling, you know if you wanted to be alone with me, you only need ask, [ he says, his breathlessness betraying his blase attitude. ]
( river doesn't move back straight away, peering over her shoulder, through the shield at the mess around them. there's a short laugh at his statement but, as he is, she's a little breathless, hearts beating quicker with the panic.
she isn't afraid, not of the situation necessarily, but it's certainly taken her by surprise. she'll be able to come up with an escape, that's what she does, she's certain of it )
This wasn't how I'd planned on doing it.
( what a date this was turning out to be. with the rocks having stopped moving river takes a step back, leaving a hand resting on his chest as she surveys the room )
[ Usually, Magnus wouldn't mind this at all. Usually, it would be a simple matter of making a portal to connect them back to Magnus' apartment, the Eiffel Tower, the Taj Mahal, anywhere they liked. But this is a different planet, a different time. Magnus has no idea what's outside of this chamber, not really, and therefore no way of knowing where he would be sending them.
He lets the shield drop and tentatively starts to step over debris towards the former entrance. ]
I suppose I could magic away the rocks. But that might take a while.
( she stepped away for a moment, surveying the room, trying to put awsy her frustrations at the fact that this date wasn't exactly going to plan.
not that many ever did but she'd wanted to show magnus something wonderful, give him a different kind of thrill and then-- he may have been absolutely right when he'd joked about fucking in the catacombs. that was never far from her mind with him.
when river turns back to him she's smiling, reaching to rest her hands on his hips as she approaches from behind )
I could think of a few things to do in that time.
( and maybe after her vortex manipulator might be able to get them out. never could be certain with this kind of time travel and older places )
[ He honestly starts slightly, at the same time as the touch but more for her words than anything physical. Trust River -- Hell, trust both of them to think of other activities at a time like this. Perhaps it's because they're both immortal, basically, and have a hard time believing in their own death. Refuse to believe that it will come so soon as now.
(Or, in the case of River, perhaps she's seen her own death. Who knows? Magnus doesn't.)
Whatever the cause, there's a thrill here, a spike of adrenaline that they can both appreciate in ways most might not.
( she goes straight for it, knowing that he's amenable. it wouldn't be the first time that they'd fucked before the end of the date.
she kisses his shoulder, pressing herself closer as ber hands slide across his body. one comes to rest on his stomach whilst the other just reaches to his groin, cupping him with a light squeeze )
What did you want to do to me before?
( because he always has ideas. now it was his turn to put her at his mercy )
[ He gives an equally light, but low, groan at the contact. River has a way about her. Exciting and spicy and adventurous. He might not know exactly where he stands with her in the grander scheme of things, but he knows for certain where they stand in each second. And that's also an aphrodisiac for him: to find someone on the same page.
His hand covers her and he spins around as he tugs her close. His fingers are wrapped around her wrist and his free hand moves to grab her hip. He smiles down at her. ]
I should pay you back for what you did to me earlier. That was mean, my darling.
