[ First there's a small noise from Peggy, a sign of life that has Steve leaning forward despite himself. Her eyes flutter open and closed a few times as they attempt to adjust to the harsh lighting in the room, something Steve wishes he could change for her. Instead of moving, though, he just continues to watch her, waiting for her to notice him.
He wants to say something; he wants to lean forward and brush her hair away from her forehead. He wants to do so many things, but he forces himself to stay still, not wanting to overwhelm her.
She still seems to be pretty out of it when she says his name, but Steve's stomach clenches up all the same, when he hears her voice. He nods slowly. ]
Yeah. Yeah, it's me. [ His lips crack into a smile. ] How are you feeling?
[ Not great, from the looks of things, but he needs to ease her into all of this as slowly as possible. ]
( peggy tries to laugh at his question but is just hurts so instead she opts for a polite smile. how is she feeling? oh, steve. she wasn't going to be honest, not brutally so and especially not when peggy knew that steve had some inclination of it. he likely knew more than she did, him being ther--
he was there. the more that peggy thought, as she woke, the more that this seemed spectacularly impossible.
it diverts her answer from his question to one of her own, half an answer in itself but also telling him more than he'd ever originally asked )
Am I dreaming?
( her dreams were often too honest, usually telling her that she was, that he was still buried under the ice. she hadn't yet had anything follow her from life into a dream, no injury or trouble related to the ssr. it had simply been her and steve )
[ Steve can see the way that Peggy's face pinches with pain when she almost laughs. Even that is enough to pull at her wounds, and so he'll need to be careful not to draw intense reactions out of her. Too bad that's going to be impossible when as far as she's concerned, he should be dead.
There's probably no way for him to break this to her that won't lead to her trying to jump out of the bed, but he'll try.
He shakes his head slowly at her question, then leans forward and grips her hand. Her skin isn't as warm to the touch as he would like, but they'll get her all patched up here. ]
I hope not. It would mean you weren't really here.
[ This is real, he's sure of it. He can't be sure of how it's happened, at least not yet, but Steve doesn't really care about that. Not when the Peggy he remembers is laying here with him. ]
